"Good morning everyone."

"Before we start, I want to raise a core question for this whole class—"(在正式上课之前,我想先为咱们这门课抛出一个核心问题:)

"Why did China, which once occupied nearly 30% of the global GDP in 1840, fail to complete industrialization spontaneously, while Western Europe finished the first industrial revolution smoothly?"(为什么在1840年曾占据全球近30% GDP的中国,未能自发完成工业化,而西欧却顺利完成了第一次工业革命?)

"This is not only a historical political question, but also the core economic question of our History and Economics course."(这不仅是一个历史政治问题,更是我们这门“历史与经济学”课程的核心经济命题。)

"Who wants to share your preliminary thoughts based on pre-class reading?"(结合课前阅读,谁想先来分享一下自己的初步想法?)

"Professor, I think the core reason is the closed-door policy."(教授,我认为核心原因在于闭关锁国政策。)

"Qing Dynasty cut off international trade, so China had no chance to access advanced western technology and industrial production modes."(清朝切断了国际贸易,导致中国没有机会接触到西方先进的技术和工业生产模式。)

A good point, but too one-sided."(这个观点不错,但稍显片面。)

"We all know the Canton System limited trade, but China still had huge trade surplus before 1840.

"Chinese tea, silk and porcelain dominated global markets.Trade closure is not the fundamental reason. Any other opinions?"

Sebastian——

"I think it’s the rigid feudal system."(我认为问题出在僵化的封建体制上。)

"The imperial court focused on agriculture and suppressed business, merchants had low social status, so private capital could not gather to develop modern industry."(朝廷重农抑商,商人的社会地位低下,导致民间资本无法集中起来发展现代工业。)

Dr. Hale 眼前一亮:"Perfect answer, combining social system and economic policy.

"That’s exactly the advantage of our joint degree—we never separate history from economy.

Today we will split this class into three parts: military and political shocks brought by unequal treaties, the collapse of traditional fiscal system, and the failed modernization attempts including Self-Strengthening Movement……"(今天我们将这堂课分为三个部分:不平等条约带来的军事与政治冲击、传统财政体系的崩溃,以及包括洋务运动在内的现代化尝试的失败……)
